If diet and lifestyle are causing thinning hair, men have a lot of options to get a thicker head of hair. The options are limited though if it’s caused by male pattern baldness.
Before you make any changes, you need to learn how to tell if your hair is thinning and why it’s thinning.
Generally, men between 16 and 21 will notice a little thinning, which is usually a maturing hairline. However, male pattern baldness may also be starting.
If the crown is also thinning, it’s probably male pattern baldness. Some early signs of balding include:
Your hair may be thinner and might start to look wispy. This means that the hair follicles are getting smaller.
If you see large amounts of hair on your pillow or going down the drain in the shower, you may be balding. However, if the hair continues to grow back just as quickly as you are losing it, you’re not really going bald. Male pattern baldness happens when your hair doesn’t replenish itself as fast as or faster then it fell out.
If your scalp is itchy and you have dandruff, you may be experiencing male pattern baldness. Excess natural oil on your scalp not only causes dandruff, but it might also cause hair loss.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is part of your genetic code. This is what causes male pattern baldness. As the levels of DHT rise, your hair will thin out. However, if you have a beard, it will be much fuller.
Your hair thinning may also be caused by other issues including age and stress. If genetics are not playing a part in hair thinning, men may see an improvement in hair growth if certain changes are made.
Age: While you can’t change aging, this factor is here because hair just grows slower as you get older. You might try to reverse the numbers in your age – say you’re 58 instead of 85. While that will certainly make you feel better, it won’t make your hair grow back any thicker. Maybe it’ll just help your mindset.
Stress: If you are stressed out, you may experience hair loss. Try to reduce stressful situations in your life either by getting rid of them or by learning how to cope with the stresses of life. While some stressors are more difficult to eliminate, you may be able to reduce that stress by doing something you enjoy after a stressful day.
A Bad Diet: The hair growing stage – anagen – needs protein, or the phase will shorten. If that happens, your hair won’t grow as much as you need to keep you from going bald. A diet that is low on iron can also contribute to hair loss.
Smoking: No lectures here! However, if you smoke over 20 cigarettes per day, you may notice some hair loss. Smoking causes poor circulation, which means that you have less blood flow to your hair follicles. That, in turn, means fewer nutrients getting to the follicles – and causes hair growth to slow down.
Alcohol: The Other Vice. While having a drink or two is probably good for you, especially your sanity, it’s not that great for hair growth. Alcohol lowers zinc levels and raises estrogen levels. You need zinc to grow hair.
Medications: Some medications cause hair loss. These drugs may include chemotherapy, medication to lower cholesterol, NSAIDs, drugs for high blood pressure, some antibiotic and anti-fungal drugs, antidepressants, and thyroid medications.
Physical Conditions: You may have another physical condition that contributes to hair loss. These may include fungal infections, some skin disorders, anemia, diabetes, thyroid disease, and lupus.
In addition to changing some of your lifestyle habits, you may also use one of the best shampoos for thinning hair – Ketoconazole.
The most popular name for this antifungal medication is Nizoral. It comes in shampoo form. Ketoconazole helps reduce the inflammation that may be contributing to hair loss.
Just shampoo it in, leave it in for 1 to 5 minutes and rinse. It also cleans the scalp, so no other shampoo is required.
How to Stop Hair Thinning
In addition to using shampoo for thinning hair and changing your lifestyle, you may take additional actions for thinning hair treatment.

Use powders or concealers that you spread in your hair. They make your hair look thicker. These are a messy alternative, though.
Go for the scalp micro-pigmentation. In this process, you get a tattoo on your scalp that looks like stubble. The tiny dots that are tattooed on your scalp look like you have a close-cropped haircut.
Wear a toupee. Somehow we think that option is going to be the last option most men will take, especially those who are rugged outdoor-type guys who play hard.
Get a hair transplant. This process takes hair from the side and back of your head and moves it to the top and crown of your head. This is one solution that you don’t want to do too early as it can give you a silly-looking hairline.
Exercise to help increase blood circulation.
Drink more water. One-quarter of every hair molecule is water. If you don’t drink enough, hair growth will be affected.
Don’t use heat on your hair – not even hair dryers. Straighteners, hair dryers, and other heated products damage your hair. It’s better to let it air dry. If you must use a hair dryer, set it on the coolest setting.
